Have you ever heard of Trichology?

Do you know what a Trichologist is?

Hi, I am Carolyn and I am a Certified Brisbane Trichologist, and my passion is hair, your hair, and educating you about your hair and scalp.

I would like to introduce myself as your hair specialist.

A Dermatologist is a skin specialist; A Trichologist is a hair specialist.

A Trichologist is a hair specialist who diagnoses and treats problems associated with hair loss and scalp conditions.

A Hair Doctor you could say.

  • Female Pattern Thinning
  • Male Pattern Baldness

  • Scaly Scalp

Trichology covers the medical and nutritional areas that relate to hair and scalp.

The textbook definition of Trichology is “the paramedical field for dealing with problems of the hair and scalp”

As a Trichologist, I frequently work with the endocrine system and its various hormones as well as the digestive system and dietary factors incorporating many other important body functions and systems.

Hair is one of the body’s most metabolically-active tissues, often reflecting the first signals of internal disturbance.

A Trichologist looks for the causes of hair loss which may be an inherited condition, hormonal, nutritional, stress related, metabolic, autoimmune, psychological, medical reaction or interaction, environmental, or any combination of these.

Hair loss problems may be temporary and self-correcting whilst others need to be corrected with nutritional/hormonal interventions. Some conditions can be stabilized and cured – whilst others cause permanent hair loss due to hair follicle destruction.

As the resident Trichologist at Zash Hair Design, I focus on examining the hair and scalp using a highly magnified microscope to view your hair as it grows through at scalp level, in conjunction with physical sampling methodology. This provides exact quantification of the current hair and scalp condition to determine the overall health of both hair and scalp and provides evidence as to the body’s effectiveness to absorb nutrients obtained from diet and supplements. The hair and its condition is a very relevant indicator of body’s functioning capacity.

Our external environment and ingested food can resemble a chemical soup these days, and no one can afford to hide away and live in a bubble.

A ‘HAIR HEALTH CHECK’, takes up to 60 minutes, costs $150 and will quickly and clearly indicate if the body is stressed or struggling to function, and if the hair and scalp are being effected as a result.

Your ‘HAIR HEALTH CHECK’ will provide you with answers to your concerns about your individual hair or scalp problem.

Call 07 3229 3242 to book your ‘HAIR HEALTH CHECK’ or email Brisbane Trichologist Carolyn with your questions info@zash.com.au

Once you have your appointment scheduled, remember DO NOT to wash your hair for 2 days prior to your appointment.

This may be difficult for some, but is very improtant that the scalp is NOT clean when diagnosing hair  loss and scalp conditions.

Should a hair health check indicate potential dietary or related health issues a ’HAIR MINERAL ANALYSIS’ can provide a comprehensive report and diagnosis upon which to base further treatment.

The hair is often the fist indicator to a developing health problem.

So be aware and LOOK out for the signs which are Hair loss, Thinning Hair, Hair Fall, Dull Hair, Dry Hair, Scaly Scalp, Flaky Scalp, Hair Breakage and Itchy Scalp.

Do you have any of the following hair problems?

Do you have trouble getting your colour to hold?

Does your colour fade quickly?

Does your hair flop quickly after styling?

Is your hair flyaway?

Is your hair frizzy?

Does your hair break  easily?

Is your hair dry despite using all the right products?

Does it take forever to grow your hair longer?

Is it getting harder to cover your scalp when styling your hair?

Do you have to wash your hair everyday because it is oily?

All of these problems are signs of a hair problem, whcih can easily be fixed by correcting the hair cycle and balancing the scalp environment. Additional methods of treatment are combined when Female Pattern Thinning and Male Pattern Thinning are present.

Most of the cases I see these days are a combination of hair problems, commonly noted combinations are:

  • Diffuse hair loss with female androgenetic alopecia
  • Diffuse hairloss with Male hair thinning
  • Womens hairloss and pregnancy
  • Scaly scalp and hair loss
  • Female hair loss and oily hair
  • Male hairloss and scaly scalp
  • Hair thinning and hairloss

Here are a sample of some scalp images I have taken using the microscope I use to diagnose hair and scalp problems.

Below Image: Female Pattern Thinning   Before Trichology Treatment

Many Vellus hairs associated with Female Pattern Thinning caused by DHT (Dehydrotesterone) binding to the Androgen receptors of the hair bulb in the front, top, recessions and hairline.

DHT is also the cause of Male thinning or Androgenetic Alopecia. This type of hairloss, in females and males, is very simple to treat, and is the most common type of hair loss in the world!

This is the exact same location on the same scalp 6 months after treatment for Female Pattern Thinning. This client also had suffered Diffuse Hairloss which resulted in diffuse damaged hairs, so we firstly focused on correcting the hair cycle and blocking the DHT which was the cause of the vellus or thinning hairs. We then began treatment to reverse the damage caused by DHT. As you can see, the result is fantastic, but we still have some vellus hairs. This client is continuing a simple proceedure which she does at home, and will continue to get improved results.

Another example of the vellus hairs associated with female hair loss. We blocked the DHT, and stated to work on removing the existing DHT. The result: Vellus hairs ane now returning back to their original size.

This is the exact same location on the scalp as above. The number of vellus hairs have increased, and are gaining their strength (diameter) and pigmentation (colour) back.  The scalp evnironment has also improved. This a good improvement for 3 months of treatment at home.

Treatment combined Prevention, to stop any further damage by the DHT, and began working on breaking down the existing DHT that was causing the shrinking of terminal hair to vellus hairs before. Treatment took around 2 minutes a day, and will continue for more improvement.

This below image shows increased shaft diameter as the vellus hairs begin thier journey back to their original terminal state, the hair pigment (colour) is returning. This result is  from only 3 months treatment in the privacy of the clients own bathroom.
